A disease that is difficult to control and is caused by a fungus (Verticillium dahliae) that penetrates the tree´s roots and settles in the plant leading to even death, and which is characterized by leaf discoloration and branch drooping.

Symptoms of Verticillium wilt appear when leaves on one or more branches of the tree suddenly wilt early in the growing season; this process intensifies as the season progresses. Death of mature trees infected with Verticillium is possible.

Additional information

The verticillium wilt does not alter the oil´s quality. The affected olive-trees tend to resprout, although the disease may reappear in ensuing years. Given the difficulties in managing the fungus once contracted, it is advisable not to plant olive-trees in infested lands and to use pathogen-free planting equipment.
