a kind of irrigation that is characterized by the fact that the overall amount of water provided to the plant is lower than it requires in order to reach the maximum production potential, and which is determined by water availability.

Example

Deficit irrigation may actually improve quality with minimal influence on crop yield. Higher levels of antioxidants, improved colour and better chemical quality may be achieved by attention to water application timing and quantity.
