Agriculture | n. phr.
The pruning of adult olive-trees whose aim is to replace the older branches, having unwanted wood and showing a fall in production, with younger and more productive branches generated from buds in the cut area.

Example

Renewal pruning [is done] to encourage new growth and to strengthen the oldest olive trees. One of the characteristics of the olive tree which has a long life is its ability to produce new shoots easily. Another way of rejuvenating the olive trees is to cut the trunk at the point where it branches, or cutting it low down.

Additional information

olive-trees allow a permanent and almost perpetual branch renewal given the many latent buds surviving in its old wood, which is why renewal pruning is successfully carried out on the centenarian olive-groves of Andalusia.
