Agriculture | n. phr.
a multiplication method typical of traditional oliviculture and carried out on the land which consists in placing the cuttings resulting from the pruning of adult olive trees into holes. These cuttings either have knots in order to facilitate their sprouting and rooting, or have been previously rooted at the greenhouse.

Example

Rooting of hardwood cuttings can be done, though can take several months. Semi-hardwood cuttings can also be rooted sometimes in straight water.

Additional information

this method has various problems: it can be carried out only during the pruning season, it requires a high amount of plant matter, which hinders genetic and sanitary controls, and it makes it difficult to introduce new varieties. In addition, formation pruning is expensive, since it favours the olive tree"s growing in a shrub shape, and it implies a late coming into production.
